NDIS 90-Day Claiming Rule: What Providers Need to Know

Plan Management article

The NDIS is introducing changes to how older payment claims are processed. These changes will affect providers, participants and Plan Management services across Australia.

From 15 October 2026, additional checks apply to claims submitted more than 90 days after a support was delivered. A new 90-day claiming limit will also take effect from 1 December 2026.

For providers, the message is simple: send invoices as soon as possible after delivering supports to help avoid payment delays.

What is changing?

There are two important dates to be aware of.

15 October 2026 – Additional checks on older claims

The National Disability Insurance Agency (NDIA) has introduced additional integrity checks for claims submitted more than 90 days after a support was delivered.

These claims may be held for up to 28 days while the NDIA reviews the information provided. Additional evidence may also be requested before payment can be approved.

Claims submitted within 90 days will continue through the usual claiming process.

1 December 2026 – New 90-day claiming limit

From 1 December 2026, claims must generally be submitted to the NDIA within 90 days of the support being delivered.

Claims submitted outside this timeframe will generally not be paid unless the NDIA accepts that exceptional circumstances apply.

This makes timely invoicing more important than ever.

When does the 90-day period start?

The 90-day timeframe starts from the date the support was delivered.

It is not calculated from:

  • The date the invoice was created
  • The date the invoice was sent
  • The date the invoice was received by a Plan Management provider
  • The date payment was processed

For example, if a provider delivers a support but waits several weeks before sending the invoice, that time still counts towards the 90-day limit.

How does this affect plan-managed invoices?

For participants who use Plan Management, providers send their invoices to the participant’s Plan Management provider for processing and payment.

The 90-day timeframe starts from the date the support was delivered, regardless of when the invoice is created, sent or received.

This means providers need to allow enough time for their Plan Management provider to receive the invoice, check the details, request any corrections if needed, and submit the claim to the NDIA within the 90-day period.

Sending an invoice to a Plan Management provider does not pause or restart the 90-day timeframe.

To help avoid payment delays or claims falling outside the allowable timeframe, providers should submit complete and accurate invoices as soon as possible after delivering supports.

What should providers do now?

There are a few simple steps providers can take to help avoid payment delays.

1. Submit outstanding invoices

Review any unpaid or outstanding invoices and submit them as soon as possible, particularly where supports were delivered close to or more than 90 days ago.

2. Invoice regularly

Try to send invoices shortly after supports are delivered rather than holding them for several weeks or months.

3. Check invoice details

Make sure invoices include the correct participant details, dates of support, NDIS support item numbers, rates and other required information.

For more guidance, read our What to Include on an NDIS Invoice resource.

4. Respond to invoice queries promptly

If your Plan Management provider asks for corrections or additional information, responding quickly will help prevent unnecessary delays.

What if an invoice is already more than 90 days old?

If you have an older invoice that has not yet been submitted, contact the participant’s Plan Management provider as soon as possible.

From 15 October 2026, older claims may be subject to additional NDIA checks and payment delays.

From 1 December 2026, the new claiming limit will apply. Claims submitted outside the 90-day period will generally not be payable unless exceptional circumstances are accepted by the NDIA.

Submitting an older invoice does not guarantee payment. It is important to address outstanding invoices early.
