Finding NDIS support in Wollongong usually starts with a question that sounds simple and is not: what kind of help do you actually need?
The NDIS uses a lot of similar-sounding terms. Support Coordination, Specialist Support Coordination, Plan Management and Psychosocial Recovery Coaching all turn up in plans, and they do genuinely different jobs. Having the wrong one funded is a common reason people feel their plan is not working.
The types of NDIS support Wollongong participants most often need
Support Coordination helps you put your plan into action. A support coordinator helps you understand what is funded, find providers who suit you, set up service agreements, and sort things out when a support is not working. If you have just received a plan and are not sure where to start, this is usually the one you are looking for.
Specialist Support Coordination is for situations with higher complexity, where there are several services involved, significant risk, or barriers that need a more senior practitioner to unpick. It is not simply more Support Coordination. It is a different funding line for a different job.
Psychosocial Recovery Coaching is recovery-focused support for people living with psychosocial disability. It works alongside Support Coordination rather than replacing it. A participant can have both, because they work on different things.
Plan Management is the financial side. A plan manager pays your providers, checks claims against your budget, and keeps your records straight.
Local knowledge matters for some supports, not all
Support Coordination, Specialist Support Coordination and Psychosocial Recovery Coaching work better when the provider knows the area. A coordinator who already knows which Illawarra services have capacity, which ones have a waitlist, and who to call at the local health district will get you moving faster than someone working from a directory.
Plan Management is different. It is administrative work that happens the same way wherever you live, which is why we offer Plan Management Australia-wide but keep the coordination services local.
What to ask before you choose a provider
- How is my funding managed, and does that limit who I can use? Worth knowing early. If any part of your plan is NDIA-managed, you can only use registered providers for that part. We are a registered NDIS provider, so we can work with you either way. There is more detail in Plan Management vs self-managed vs NDIA-managed.
- Who will I actually be working with? Ask for a name, not a team.
- What happens if it is not working? A provider who answers this one well is usually a provider worth having.
- How soon can you start? Capacity across the Illawarra varies a lot.
What if your plan does not include the support you need?
It happens often. A plan might fund Plan Management but not Support Coordination, or fund Support Coordination when what the person actually needs is Recovery Coaching.
You do not have to wait for a full plan reassessment to raise it. You can ask the NDIA to review a decision, and a plan reassessment can be requested if your circumstances have changed. It helps to be specific about what you are asking for and why, and to have evidence of what you have already tried.
If you are not sure what to ask for, your Local Area Coordinator can help, and so can we.
Getting started
There is no long process at our end. Get in touch, tell us roughly what is going on, and we will tell you honestly whether we are the right fit. If we are not, we will usually know who is.
Where else to get help
The NDIS funds Local Area Coordination partners in the Illawarra who can help with plan questions at no cost. They are worth using, particularly before a plan reassessment.
